Greyhound and Amtrak both provide service to nearby Oakland on at least a daily
basis. Let us know if you are planning to come by train; you may well end up
on the same train as other attendees, link up with them, and get a headstart
on the conference.

We recommend arriving early in the afternoon of Friday, June 7th, and departing
late afternoon on Sunday, June 9th; however, we can accommodate arrivals as
early as Thursday afternoon and departures as late as Monday morning, with
advance
notice (get out and enjoy the Bay Area!). A slight extra fee will apply
($30/night).
All attendees are welcome to attend the regular Thursday night meeting of BMUG,
a local users group, and join that group for dinner.

ACCOMODATIONS:

The conference will almost entirely take place in and around the U.C. Berkeley
dorms. Accordingly, we strongly encourage all attendees to stay there. The
spacious,
recently remodeled rooms have carpeting, draperies, solid oak beds, desks, and
wardrobes. They most likely bear little resemblance to the dorm rooms you may
remember from your college years.

Bathrooms are shared among others on a floor, but are very private, have
individual
showers, and are same-sex (except on designated floors for couples). All
facilities
are designed to be wheelchair-accessible; please indicate on the registration
form if you need handicapped facilities.

Several swimming and sports facilities are available for the convenience of
attendees. For $2-6, you can swim in Olympic-size pools; play tennis, squash,
handball, and racquetball; and use the weight rooms.

Special services such as child care will be available; contact us for details.

We encourage attendees to stay at the dorms, for the fullest experience of the
conference. We recommend the double rooms for the best rate; we will match you
with a roommate. If you wish to share a room with somebody in particular, both
of you must say so on the form below.

If you prefer, you can stay at the nearby Hotel Durant, just one block away.
It has single rooms at $69/night, and double rooms at $79. We have a number
of rooms reserved for conference attendees; get yours through the main Powwow
number below. In addition, some local users group leaders are offering space
in their homes for attendees who need it.

Hi Raines,
Several of the local User Group folks are backing the effort. Mostly
it is volunteer work. We will collect $25.00 per year from members
as it moves along to help off set the newletter costs and International
mailing costs. We found that many of the Mac Users in other countries
are in need of Mac User Group resources and we hope to accommodate some
of those needs by sharing libraries, newsletter articles, newsletters,
speaker info, product specials and more....

We are looking for volunteers to help direct the effort, AMUG is currently
the moving force but what I would like to have eventually is a cooperative
effort among many User Groups. This would make a great way for all User
Groups to interact and actually have a catalog of services they could
contribute to and recieve from. One large clearing house for User Group
tools, education, special offers and other items of interest is what
we are interested in. Would you be interested in participating?

IMUG members so far include members from Iceland, Australia, US, Belgiem,
Switzerland. We will have an office in France in September/October. So
the work continues. I think it will be really cool once we get the network
completed.

Menlo Park, California, April 30, 1991 -- Connectix Corporation today announced
two new products that offer Mac-II class systems complete compatibility with
the powerful memory features of System 7.0.  MODE32 is a software utility that
enables Mac II, IIx, IIcx, and SE/30 systems to run in standard System 7 32-bit
mode in the same manner as the more recent Mac II-family systems.  MC73 is the
PMMU memory coprocessor needed to run Apple VM or Connectix Virtual on the
original Mac II.

MODE32 is a unique utility for Mac II, IIx, IIcx, and SE/30 users who want to
use System 7 32-bit mode.  It allows these systems to access 32-bit mode
through the standard System 7memory control panel in the same fashion as later
ROM systems (IIci, IIsi, IIfx and LC).  Without MODE32, the controls for 32-bit
mode do not appear on the panel and it is not possible to use 32-bit mode.
MODE32 is an INIT and cdev which is transparent in normal operation.

Using 32-bit mode, the Mac II, IIx, IIcx, and SE/30 can access up to 128
megabytes of contiguous physical application memory and up to 1 gigabyte (1000
megabytes) of contiguous virtual memory.   This mode overcomes the traditional
8 megabyte limit of previous Macintosh Operating Systems.

MODE32 works by enabling the use of the System 7 32-bit addressing mode which
would normally not be accessible on the SE/30, II, IIx, and IIcx systems.  This
problem occurs because the software built into the ROMs of these systems was
designed only to be compatible with the less powerful 24-bit addressing mode
(which was standard in System 6.0).  By extending the compatibility of those
ROMs to the new 32-bit mode, MODE32 provides full System 7.0 32-bit
functionality to these earlier systems.

MODE32 will be of interest both to users with large amounts of physical RAM
(>
8MB) and those with less RAM who would like to use more than 14MB of virtual
memory (System 7 VM or Connectix Virtual).  MODE32 has a suggested retail price
of $169 and is expected to be released concurrently with System 7.0 in mid-May.

MC73 is the Motorola 68851 Paged Memory Management Unit, commonly known as a
PMMU.  The PMMU is required in order to run System 7.0 VM on a standard Mac
II.
With a PMMU, the Mac II is fully compatible with standard VM virtual memory,
but still needs MODE32 to operate physical or virtual memory in 32-bit mode.
The original 68020-based Mac II incorporated a motherboard socket specifically
designed for this memory coprocessor.  Ironically, the more recent 68020-based
Mac LC is not able to take advantage of this upgrade as it lacks the necessary
motherboard socket.

The name MC73 refers to the fact that the PMMU is the current MC68851RC16A Mask
73 version, the only version known to be fully compatible with all of the
Macintosh Operating System.  MC73 also includes a 3M disposable grounding strap
and a detailed installation manual.  The product has a list price of $179,
carries a 90-day warranty, and is shipping now.

Now that HyperCard 2.1 is shipping, our user group, the Princeton Macintosh
Users' Group (PMUG), is in the embarrassing position of being asked to
distribute to its members a HyperCard version (2.0v1) which is obsolete by not
one, but _two_ revisions. This was bad enough when the bugfix version 2.0v2
was
current; but 2.1 is a major revision with important added features.

Your response: "Claris has no plans at this time to license HyperCard 2.0v2,
future releases, or stacks for distribution through user groups. While we want
to see HyperCard widely available and used, the strategies employed for doing
this at Apple aren't necessarily those we'll use at Claris."

Let's get one red herring out of the way first: Claris _is_ Apple; let no one
imagine otherwise. When Apple says "Jump," Claris jumps. Am I right or am I
right? The pretense that this is all a simple misunderstanding because we poor
schmucks just don't realize that we're dealing with two completely different
companies is just that: pretense.

Ever since HyperCard's introduction, the phrase "HyperCard is system software"
has been a mantra you at Apple chanted over and over to calm the ire of
software publishers (remember FileVision?) who feared it would preempt their
markets. Apparently there's been a major, but not too well publicised, policy
change on this recently. Fine, that's your privilege. The problem is that your
new policy--if it can be dignified by that name--is so confused and confusing
that it is angering many of your customers. 
(And if you've forgotten how
important user groups are as customers, I suggest you go back and reread
Chapter 7 of "The Macintosh Way.")

So HyperCard 2.1 is/isn't system software. It is, because anybody who buys
System 7.0 gets it in the box. It isn't, because anybody who gets System 7.0
from a user group is forced to take HC 2.0v1 instead. It is, because it's
included free with all new Macs. It isn't, because the user groups who have
done the most to make it popular are now forbidden to distribute it, even as
they go on distributing other Apple system software. Is this a policy? To me
it
sounds more like the old game "She loves me...she loves me not..."

And just out of curiosity, can you explain to me how you think it's going to
help Apple's and Claris's marketing efforts to have user groups distributing
a
seriously obsolete _and_ known buggy version of this major product? In exactly
what way will your reputation for delivering clean software be enhanced by
putting old, flaky copies of HC 2.0v1 into the hands of thousands of user group
members?

If your idea is that everybody will get disgusted with the old buggy version
they got for free, and rush out and plunk down their money for HC 2.1, think
again. It's far more likely that those who get disgusted will put HyperCard
on
the shelf indefinitely, rather than throw good money after bad!

Look, there's no question that Apple/Claris are entitled--indeed, obligated
to
your shareholders--to make money. Our objection is to your extremely
inconsistent behavior. If you simply said, "OK, enough pump-priming--from now
on HyperCard is a commercial application, and if you want it, you gotta pay
for
it," and then _stopped_ distributing it with System software--AND with new
Macs--AND through user groups--we would be if not delighted, at least
understanding. That would be a clear, consistent policy.

Instead, we hear you saying one thing out of one side of your mouth and another
thing out of the other: on the one side, "Claris has no plans at this time to
license HyperCard 2.0v2," but on the other, "Claris... will send a single-user
copy of HyperCard 2.0v2 to a customer who calls Claris Tech Support and
requests one--if that customer has a legitimate copy of HyperCard 2.00
[obtained from a user group]..." On the one side, "Claris has discontinued the
HyperCard licensing policy that Apple previously maintained for User Groups"...
but on the other, BMUG has been widely and reliably reported to be distributing
2.0v2 to its members, in direct contravention of your stated policy--even as
other user groups with less clout are stonewalled.

The situation has become farcical, and my feeling is that we are doing our
members a _dis_service by distributing this obsolete and buggy software. I
think it's time to call a halt. I have recommended to our Executive Committee
that PMUG no longer distribute HyperCard. In addition, we are exploring the
possibility of offering Silicon Beach's SuperCard to our members at a
substantial discount. (After all, if you _have_ to pay for it, why not get the
best?) I encourage other user groups to do likewise.

Not all articles have graphics associated with them. I personally like
having it in text format. Makes the job as editor much easier for me!

AOL and AppleLink do have articles...but I have found more useful ones
here in MUG Administration.

policy for MUGs.  Don't know if anything came of it.  You can contact him in

Thank you!  As president of WAMUG, I, too have run into the HC
2.0/2.0v2/2.1 confusion.  I'm confused, our members are confused!  It is
very frustrating to try to figure out Apple/Claris' policy on this matter.
 I have solved it for myself:  I don't use HyperCard anymore; I've
switched wholeheartedly to Silicon Beach's SuperCard and I'm not looking
back (yet).

Unfortunately, as AppleEvents get more focus, HyperCard 2.1 will be a
necessity.  Apple doesn't seem interested in making sure we have the
tools.

Several User Groups have recently contacted the User Group Connection and other
departments at Apple and Claris about HyperCard 2.1 distribution.

We hope this memo will clarify Claris' HyperCard distribution policies. We
apologize if information on this policy has not previously reached your User
Group or if this policy has caused any confusion.

The HyperCard product was transferred from Apple to Claris last September.
Since then, Claris has been responsible for HyperCard's success and product
strategy.  After the first release of HyperCard version 2.0 last fall, Claris
decided to discontinue the licensing policy that Apple previously had for
HyperCard.  Users who received the first release of HyperCard 2.0 could obtain
the HyperCard 2.0v2 program from Claris at no charge by calling Claris Customer
Relations.

Because the User Group Software Licensing Agreement does not cover the
distribution of HyperCard 2.0v2 or 2.1, Apple User Groups are not authorized
to
distribute, nor will they be receiving, copies of HyperCard 2.0v2 or 2.1.  This
policy is not new with HyperCard 2.1.

This message has been communicated in several places. First, Claris' policy
change regarding HyperCard is mentioned in the letter accompanying the System
7.0 disks recently sent to all licensed User Groups--those who have signed
System Software Licensing Agreements with Apple. Second, the cover letter for
the June User Group mailing, sent today (5/30) to all Apple User Group
Ambassadors, also restates the change in HyperCard licensing.  This mailing
was delayed in order to include System 7.0 training materials.  Third, Claris'
HyperCard distribution policy is mentioned in the Claris Technical Library on
America Online. Finally, Claris also posted a statement on AppleLink in January
explaining Claris' HyperCard policy.

To ensure that Claris's HyperCard policy on licensing reaches all User
Groups, a separate letter will be sent in the near future to Apple User Groups,
explaining why Claris changed the policy.

APPLE SYSTEM SOFTWARE
Apple controls the licensing of Macintosh and Apple II System Software. The
Apple User Group Connection has negotiated a software licensing agreement for
User Groups, giving them the option of distributing Macintosh and Apple II
System Software at no cost to their members.

We were pleased to be able to provide a set of System 7.0 disks recently to
licensed User Groups to facilitate that distribution. Those User Groups ARE
authorized to distribute System 7.0 to members.  Apple did not deliver
HyperCard 2.1 disks to User Groups because it is not covered under Apple's
software licensing agreement and because Claris has discontinued the HyperCard
licensing policy.

It should be noted that System 7.0 does NOT require HyperCard 2.1.  Users can
continue to use HyperCard 2.0 with the new System Software.

HYPERCARD 2.1 UPGRADES
HyperCard 2.1 upgrades are available in several ways:

 HyperCard 2.1 Upgrade Kits are available at $49 for users of HyperCard 1.2.5
or earlier. Order directly by calling 800-544-8554.

 Registered users of HyperCard 2.0 can get a free update to HyperCard 2.1 by
calling Claris Customer Relations at 408-727-8227.  Registered users are people
who bought a HyperCard Development Kit or HyperCard 2.0 Upgrade from Claris
and
sent in the product registration card.

All others (people who got 2.0 through user groups, with 3rd party products,
etc.) are not entitled to a free update.  They'll need to order the $49 upgrade
from Claris.

 System 7.0 Upgrade Kits, available from Apple through Apple resellers,
include HyperCard 2.1 disks. Suggested retail prices: $99 for the Personal
Upgrade Kit; $349 for the Group Upgrade Kit.

Again, we apologize for any confusion that this HyperCard licensing
change may have caused among Apple User Groups. If you have further questions
about HyperCard, please contact Claris Customer Relations at 408-727-8227.

Persuasion User Group - UK

The next meeting of the UK Persuasion User Group will be held on 19th June from
2.30pm to 5.30 pm at the Wembley exhibition centre. This is at the same time
as
the Corporate Publishing conference and exhibition, so it will be a good
oportunity to combine two events in one visit.

The subject for the afternoon is "The Creative Use of Type in Presentation
Media". Our meeting starts with Cynthia Hollandsworth of Agfa Compugraphic.
She
is their leading typographer and a fascinating fund of information. We then
will be hearing from a speaker from Adobe UK - we are hoping for Sue Thexton.
Linotype have also been invited to contribute, but at this date have been
unable to nominate a speaker.

The presentations take up the first half of the afternoon and are then followed
by an interactive forum where users can discuss a variety of ideas and problems
with the speakers.

For a while, it seems my link was broken.  Anyway, when I last heard from
everyone,
there was discussion about meeting on day 2, Wednesday, at 1 or 2 PM. In our
latest mailing from Apple, just received yesterday, there is mention of a User
Group breakfast.

So, the fundamental question is, is everyone going to meet on Thursday, or
Wednesday,
or both days??  In other words, if I show up at the user group room on Wednesday

Well, I don't know how serious any of this is, but I have Binkley, etc, running
under SoftPC.  I'm only a point for now, but it all works.  There are a few
point-point callers, but not anywhere near the volume of most BBS's.

Well I know that the softPC and a classic just don't mix. I find that it could
be a solution if softPC was run on an '030 machine. Just want to know if it
is faster.

Yeah I would be very interested if SoftPC was faster  on a 030 PMMU

Thanks for the post from Andy Baird, Editor of PMUG, regarding Claris' latest
distribution policy of Hypercard.  It seems that Apple and Claris are really
bedfellows now, as Apple is packaging Hypercard 2.1 with System 7 software and
every new Mac.
It bothers me that out UGs now can only distribute the buggy Hypercard
"stepchild"
(2.0v1) and earlier obsolete versions.  It makes us look bad and doesn't do
much for Apple either.  It makes me wonder if we should continue to distribute
it, with warnings on the package similar to cigarette packaging warnings - or
maybe not at all....

I've vetoed breakfast, at least for me, since I don't want to go back for a
second day.  Not that I'd mine, just don't want to take that much time away.
Also, I'm commuting up for the day, and not planning on spending the night.
It's a 2+ hr drive, each way, so, I'll look forward to seeing you at the UG
room, on Wednesday, at 1:00 PM, or there abouts.  Hope to see a lot of people
there.

I'm not 100 percent sure but I think BMUG is not distributing HyperCard for
reasons suggested above.  What I am sure of is that they stated they would not
answer questions on HyperCard, but would refer them to Claris.  Since BMUG gets
a heck of a lot of telephone calls (the number 10,000 a month comes to mind;
they are the largest telephone point on the coast) this could have an impact.

I am searching for a list of Macintosh User Groups to be used for
solocitation
of commercial products.
Personally, I want to market some software products and a service to user
groups on a regular basis. There is another party in this city who has
developed fantastic "visual file selector" (look on page 70 of the latest
MacWarehouse catalog -
lower righthand corner) and he/they want to send demo copies of the program
to user groups [the manual for that program is superb!! ;-) ]

I have contacted Apple for the list and was told that I couldn't get a list
for commercial purposes (then again, it took them 6 years to go after market

Because, if you already had the 030 Mac, and already had made the commitment
to have 8Megs of ram, and you became interested in the BBS community, and you
weren't certain how much of a plunge you wanted to take, an 030 Mac running
SoftPC gives you a WHOLE BUNCH more options than just a Mac, and it's abt 25%
of the price of a clone, with minimal functionality, and there is no problem
moving files to the desktop of your latest FREQ.  I know, it's a run on
sentence,
but it works.  Kinda like SoftPC.

<Mike Holm of Claris Corp. was kind enough to provide the following
HyperCard question-and-answer document, which offers information about the
program, the licensing policy and upgrade paths. Hope it's helpful to you.
If you find anything missing, just holler -- I'm sure that Claris would
like to know.

                  *** HyperCard 2.1 Q&A ***
Q: What is HyperCard 2.1?
A: HyperCard 2.1 is the latest revision to HyperCard. It takes advantage
of new features in System 7.

Q: What are the new features in version 2.1?
A: The main new feature is support for System 7 Inter-Application
Communication (IAC). This allows HyperCard scripters to create programs
that can communicate across AppleTalk networks, as well as to control and
communicate with other System 7-aware applications.

Q: What are the system requirements for HyperCard 2.1?
A: Version 2.1 requires system version 6.0.5 or higher. Two 800k floppy
drives or one floppy drive and a hard drive are required, and a hard drive
is strongly recommended. When running System 7, the Macintosh should have
a minimum 2.5 megabtyes of RAM.

Q: My company (or school) bought the System 7.0 Group Upgrade Kit CD-ROM.
Can we distribute the HyperCard that came with it?
A: Up to 20 copies of the HyperCard program can be made by buyers of the
Group Upgrade Kit to help with the administrative work in upgrading users
to System 7. To make a greater number than this, a license must be
obtained from Claris. See the instructions in the kit or the HyperCard
Upgrade Licensing stack in the Administrator's folder on the CD-ROM.

Q: I am a corporate customer with a lot of HyperCard users.  Do I have to
buy an upgrade kit for each one?
A: No. Corporate customers can upgrade through a Volume Purchase from
Claris, which requires that the customer be granted a Right To Copy
license. Volume Purchases provide customers with a license to copy the
software. Upgrade Manuals can be ordered separately as needed. Customers
who have already licensed HyperCard 2.0 through a volume purchase are
automatically covered for version 2.1 at no extra charge.

Q: What if I only need the HyperCard program, not a complete upgrade?
A: Volume Purchase terms are available for just the HyperCard program for
corporate and education sites.

Q: I subscribe to Apple's System Software Update Program (ASSUP). Is
HyperCard still included in this?
A: No. But some subscribers to ASSUP may have licenses which included
rights to distribute HyperCard in their organizations.  Check with a

Welcome to the 1991 National Apple Users Group Conference. Thank you for your
registration.

We hope you will be able to accomplish three things at Powwow. Namely:

   > Learn about the latest in Mac technical innovations and the industry
   > Share user group experiences so we can all better run our groups
   > Enjoy a relaxing weekend in scenic Berkeley

If we can do anything to help you accomplish any of these, please dont
hesitate to let us know. Weve tried to design the event to make the whole
package as enjoyable as possible.

Please find attached a rough outline of the sessions. We can still use
speakers, participants, and session leaders for several of the panels and
workshops, and we have a few open slots, so if you are interested in speaking
on a particular UG-related topic, please come prepared to do so.

Be aware that the city of Berkeley and the University aggressively ticket
parked cars, and on-street spaces are difficult to find near campus. If you
have arranged for parking with us, your at-the-door packet will include a
permit good for parking at the Ellsworth Parking Structure, across Channing
Way
and Dana St. from the dorms. If you didnt arrange for a permit from us, you
can get a day permit for $3 in quarters each day at the lot (but be sure to
obtain an identification card at check-in to put on your dashboard).

In case of emergency, leave this info behind: The main conference phones (
415-215-9550 and 800-766-5807) will forward to the conference itself from
Friday to Sunday, June 7 to 9; you can give them out as a message number. In
addition, the campus unit housing number, 415-642-5391 can be used for relaying
emergency messages during the conference. Each room has its own phone number,
so people can call you directly for non-emergency contact.

Getting There

From San Francisco airport, several shuttles are available. We recommend that
you call to reserve a spot with one of them if coming from San Francisco. They
are:

Airport Connection: [phone]. $13 from S.F.
Bay Area Shuttle: [phone]. $10 from S.F. or Oakland
BayPorter Express: [phone]. $15 from S.F. or Oakland

The rates listed apply to service to the Durant Hotel, 1.5 blocks uphill from
the conference. You can take the shuttle  there and walk downhill to 2450. For
the economy-minded, from S.F. you can take a SamTrans express bus to the
Transbay terminal in San Francisco, and from there an AC Transit F bus to
Berkeley, debarking at Durant Avenue. From Oakland, you can hop an AIr-BART
shuttle to the subway, take a Richmond train to the Berkeley station, and call
for a pickup.

Driving, from Highway 80, take the University Avenue offramp, and go 2 miles
to
the end of University Avenue, at the campus. Take a Right on Oxford, go 5
blocks, and then a Left on Durant. Go 3 blocks to 2450 Durant. You can unload
in the white zones, and pick up your parking permit, and proceed to the lot.

The conference takes place at 2450 Durant Avenue, between Dana and Telegraph
Avenues, In Berkeley. The site is the Unit III residence halls.

When is the Conference?

In case you arrive Thursday evening, the BMUG meeting, in Physical Sciences
Lecture hall on campus, starts at 6 p.m.; at about 9 p.m., you are invited to
join the BMUG volunteers for dinner.

The main conference begins at 10 AM Friday, and continues until 1 PM Wednesday.

Check In & Out (for the dorms):

Housing registration is open Thursday and Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, at the office
below  the Unit 3 Dining Room (facing the Durant Avenue side) between Norton
and Spens Black halls. Unit 3 headquarters, where you check in to your room
(located underneath the dining commons) will be open Monday through Friday from
7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you
arrive after 4 p.m., you may check in at the Unit Office or you may contact
a
conference clerk at the posted telephone number after hours.

Check out will be on Sunday, June 9 at 3 p.m. (unless you have arranged to stay
until Monday, in which case it will be Noon Monday). At this time, return your
room keys to the Unit III office. There will be a $35 per key charge for keys
not returned.

Campus Amenities:

Each dorm room has solid oak furniture, including two single beds, two chests
of drawers, two desks with chairs, two wardrobes, bookshelves and two mirrors.
There is one central bathroom on each floor with private toilets and shower
stalls. In the lobby of the hall, there are soda and candy vending machines,
as
well as a kitchenette with an ice machine, refrigerator and microwave oven.

Leave your sleeping bags at home; beds will be made with a pillow, pillowcase,
sheets, blanket, and bedspread. Two towels, face cloth, and a bar of soap are
provided. Towels are changed every other day.

Telephone service, including campus and local calling, is available in each
room. Campus and local (up to 8 mile radius) calls are free; longer calls must
be charged to major credit cards such as MasterCard, Visa and American Express,
or to calling cards such as AT&T, Pacific Bell, MCI and Sprint. Telephones and
dialing instructions are provided in each room. Modular jacks are provided,
so
you can plug your modems right in. Three-prong power for computers is available
in each room, as well.

Several nearby campus athletic facilities with swimming pools, weight rooms,
and handball, squash, racquetball, and tennis courts are available for a use
fee of $3-6 per day. Details will be posted in each dormitory building.

The dorms we are using have been recently remodeled and meet all federal and
state requirements for the physically disabled. If you have additional
requirements, please let us know and well see what we can do to help.

What to bring:

Mark Twain once said: The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San
Francisco. While Berkeley isnt quite as bad, it is just across the bay from
The City, and subject to some of the same chilling fog, although it usually
burns off rapidly. Temperatures will range from 45 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Above all, dress casual and comfortable. A couple of the sessions may require
a
four block cross-campus walk, so bring good shoes.

Also, bring an open mind. Your full attention. Ideas. Inspiration. Patience.
Understanding. Tolerance. Also, optionally:

   > Exchange Newsletters. At least 50 different groups will be represented
at
the conference, so you may have some opportunities to initiate new exchanges.

   > Group Stuff. A lot of groups would love to look at a copy of your bylaws,
articles of incorporation, and the like, as well as any instructional
documentation, books, teaching materials, or special projects your group has
put together. We can take care of duplication on demand for
presentation-related handouts, so just one copy is fine.

   > Computers. Some machines will be available for common use, but dont rely
them if you need guaranteed computer access. We will have some secure areas
if
you want your machine to be under guard; we cant be responsible for machines
walking from the dorm rooms, although youll be the only one with a key. Dont
bring your only non-backed up copy of anything, prototype hardware, or a
back-breaking load.

   > Spending money. While were feeding you semi-regularly from Friday night
through Sunday morning, you may discover a need for late night snacks, or
become tempted by the nearby pizza parlors or tie-dye jewelry vendors on
Telegraph Avenue, just 50 feet away. Also, the post-conference agenda Sunday
afternoon may include a museum field trip, or other events or meals not covered
by the basic registration. Nearby amenities include 24-hour laser parlors
(desktop publishing service bureaus), a post office, fax services, and more.

New Speakers Bureau to Bring Apple User Groups and Developers Together

Macintosh User Group News Service (MNS) and Apple Computer, Inc., join together
to link software developers and user groups for exchange of product information
and ideas

SCHENECTADY, NY, June, 1991-- The MUG News Service (MNS), working in
cooperation with Apple's User Group Connection, announced today a nationwide
Speakers Bureau for user groups and third-party developers.  The service is
designed to arrange product demonstrations and exchange information between
developers and Apple User Groups - the computing community's most influential
users.

The service is free to both developers and user groups.

In his publication, The Macintosh Way, Guy Kawasaki noted, User Groups can
accelerate the success of a product or kill it at the gate.  Effectively
working with Users Groups can negate a competitors larger sales force and
greater resources because User Groups will spread the word for you.  User
Groups are indeed powerful.  In a recent Developer's Connect pubished by Apple,
the User Group Connection found that 94% of user group members influence
computer purchase decisions in their organizations.

However, user groups and developers who are eager to demonstrate their
products, typically have difficulty finding each other and arranging meetings.
Developers recognize the importance of winning product acceptance from user
group members, but often find it difficult to know who to contact in a user
group.  Meeting scheduling is a time consuming effort.  Not any more!

The MNS Speakers Bureau will solve both problems, according to Don Rittner,
who
heads MNS.  The MNS Speakers Bureau database contains contact names for both
user groups and developers.  MNS will arrange the meetings free of charge.
"Company reps that are travelling through various parts of the country can now
call MNS. MNS will check for a user group in their destination area, and
arrange a demo.  Likewise, User Groups can request MNS to find companies to
demonstrate their products to their group," he said.

"It's a win-win situation," according to Craig Elliott, Manager of Apple's User
Group Connection.  "Both user groups and developers benefit.  It is a great
way
for developers to evangelize their product by giving hands on demonstrations
to
thousands of actual users.   Apple expects that the Speakers Bureau will
enhance the developer-customer installed base, and ensure that Apple
third-party product development is driven by the needs and feedback of Apple
computer users.

In a nutshell, here's how it will work:

A developer calls MNS and says "I will be flying to Missoula, Montana the week
of July 6.  Are there any user groups within a 20 mile radius and can you book
us to demo our xyz software?"

MNS will check the database, find a group if there is one, contact them, and
ask if they can make time for xyz software company to demo their product.

If yes, MNS will get back to the company and give them the UG contact, map to
their meeting room, and other details!

User Groups can do the same.

A call or email to MNS requests a speaker for a particular month on graphics,
for example.

MNS will check the developer database, check for a graphics company that is
willing to go to that user group location, and makes the connection.

MNS contacts the user group and gives the contact name and other details.

That's how easy it is.

How do you participate?
MNS is now accepting applications from third-party developers and user groups
who would like to participate in the free program.

User Group leaders and developers can contact MNS on America Online (AFL DonR),
AppleLink (UG0194) or GEnie (MNS), or can call 518-374-1088.  Or, simply fill
out the enclosed application form and email it back.

What is MUG News Service (MS)
MNS is a UPI-like news service that reaches 350,000 Apple users in the United
States, Canada, and 14 other countries through a monthly mailing (disk).  Since
its inception in July 1988, MNS has organized promotional activities and
information exchange between Apple user groups and companies including ACIUS;
Advanced Software; America Online; Apple Computer, Inc.; CE Software; Eastman
Kodak; Informix;  Microlytics; and others.

MNS serves Apple user groups worldwide and provides articles, reviews,
tutorials, clip art, news, press releases, demos, and more, for user groups
to
use in their newsletters and provide to their general membership. Furthermore
MNS provides technical help, special third party discounts, even free software
and hardware.  User Groups that are members of MNS have access to the complete
monthly disks via the MNS ONLINE BBS directly or over FidoNet. For North
American groups, MNS provides information through a special private forum on
GEnie Information Serivces, and America Online.  MNS works closely with Apple's
User Group Connection (which distributed a special Novice Stack in their
mailings) and third party companies to provide the best and latest information
to user group members.  All these services are FREE to the participating user
groups.

MNS was founded by Don Rittner, a long time Mac user and former columnist for
Macazine (1985) and Macintosh Horizons (1986).  He has also written for MacWeek
and MacUser Magazine.  Rittner is the founder and president of one of the
oldest Mac user groups in the United States - MECCA, (founded two months after
the Mac was introduced) in Albany, NY. This fall, Peachpit Press is publishing
a book he authored called "EcoLinking," a directory of online resources for
the
worldwide environmental community.  He also is the forum leader for America
Online's User Group Forum where more than 200 user group ambassadors meet each
week for conferences on user group issues as well as interviews with third
party developers.  The entire staff of Apple's User Group Connection also
participates in his User Group Forum.

Q: What is HyperCard 2.1?
A: HyperCard 2.1 is the latest revision to HyperCard. It takes advantage of
new features in System 7.

Q: What are the new features in version 2.1?
A: The main new feature is support for System 7 Inter-Application
Communication (IAC). This allows HyperCard scripters to create programs that
can communicate across AppleTalk networks, as well as to control and
communicate with other System 7-aware applications.

Q: What are the system requirements for HyperCard 2.1?
A: Version 2.1 requires system version 6.0.5 or higher. Two 800k floppy
drives or one floppy drive and a hard drive are required, and a hard drive is
strongly recommended. When running System 7, the Macintosh should have a
minimum 2.5 megabtyes of RAM.

A: Registered users can receive a free update to 2.1 by contacting Claris
Customer Relations at 408-727-8227. Registered users are people who purchased
a HyperCard 2.0 upgrade or Development Kit from Claris or a Claris reseller,
and who have sent in their product registration cards or registered with Claris
by phone.

Q: I didnt upgrade to HyperCard 2.0 through Claris. What should I do?
A: Order the $49 upgrade from Claris or authorized Claris reseller. The
upgrade includes 5 disks of software, a 70-page New Features Guide, and
500-page Script Language Guide.

Q: Will user groups be allowed to distribute HyperCard 2.1?
A: No. The only way to get the complete HyperCard 2.1 Development Kit or
Upgrade is through Claris or its resellers.

Q: I just bought a new Macintosh. How can I get into HyperCard?
A: If youre a new Macintosh owner or havent worked with HyperCard before,
you should purchase the HyperCard Development Kit from a Claris reseller.


                   *** Corporate and Education Users ***

Q: My company (or school) bought the System 7.0 Group Upgrade Kit CD-ROM.  Can
we distribute the HyperCard that came with it?
A: Up to 20 copies of the HyperCard program can be made by buyers of the Group
Upgrade Kit to help with the administrative work in upgrading users to System
7. To make a greater number than this, a license must be obtained from Claris.
See the instructions in the kit or the HyperCard Upgrade Licensing stack in
the
Administrators folder on the CD-ROM.

Q: I am a corporate customer with a lot of HyperCard users. Do I have to buy
an upgrade kit for each one?
A: No. Corporate customers can upgrade through a Volume Purchase from Claris,
which requires that the customer be granted a Right To Copy license. Volume
Purchases provide customers with a license to copy the software. Upgrade
Manuals can be ordered separately as needed. Customers who have already
licensed HyperCard 2.0 through a volume purchase are automatically covered for
version 2.1 at no extra charge.

Q: What if I only need the HyperCard program, not a complete upgrade?
A: Volume Purchase terms are available for just the HyperCard program for
corporate and education sites.

Q: I subscribe to Apples System Software Update Program (ASSUP). Is
HyperCard still included in this?
A: No. But some subscribers to ASSUP may have licenses which included rights
to distribute HyperCard in their organizations. Check with a Claris
representative to determine if a license obtained through ASSUP currently
covers HyperCard. In most cases licenses that included HyperCard have expired.
If so, a new license can be obtained through Clariss Volume Purchase program.

Q: What about education customers?
A: Education sites may purchase the HyperCard Development Kit singly at a deep
discount. Volume purchase dicsounts are available for the Development Kit and
for the program only. See your Claris representative or reseller for details.


                     *** HyperCard in the Macintosh box ***

Q: Is HyperCard 2.1 still bundled with every Macintosh?
A: Yes. A HyperCard 2.1 sampler will be bundled with every Macintosh in the
same configuration that existed with version 2.0. That is, one 1.44MB diskette
with the HyperCard 2.1 program, a Home stack, Appointments stack, Addresses
stack, and the Audio Help stack.

Q: Is this a runtime version of HyperCard?
A: No. While the higher user levels of the program are hidden in the Home
stack, the HyperCard program which comes with new Macintoshes is fully capable.
There is no runtime version of HyperCard.

Q: If HyperCard comes in my new Macintosh, why would I want to buy the Claris
HyperCard Development Kit?
A: The HyperCard sampler that is bundled with new Macintoshes is designed to
introduce new Macintosh owners to HyperCard. Three useful stacks are provided
so new Macintosh users can immediately put HyperCard to work, however, the
bundled edition is not designed for authoring. The HyperCard Development Kit
includes complete documentation to take users from beginning to advanced work,
and includes 5 diskettes of libraries and tools for building software.  For
would-be HyperCard programmers, the Development Kit is more than just
additional manuals, it is also the collection of tools and resources available
in the development kit.


                        *** HyperCard and System 7 ***

Q: Is HyperCard 2.1 shipping with System 7 upgrades?
A: Yes. The HyperCard 2.1 program is part of the System 7 Group and Personal
Upgrade Kits. The System 7 upgrades don't include the documentation and other
tools to build stacks using the new features in HyperCard 2.1. To get these
you should order a HyperCard upgrade from Claris or buy the HyperCard
Development Kit from an authorized reseller.

Q: Can we distribute the HyperCard stuff included in the System 7 Group
Upgrade Kit?
A: The license in the Group Upgrade Kit allows up to 20 copies to be made of
the HyperCard program for use with stacks in the kit. To make more copies than
this you must obtain a license from Claris. Such licenses are available only
to government, corporate, or education customers.

Q: How do I make additional copies of HyperCard 2.1 for my company?
A: Arrange for a Volume Purchase from a Claris representative or reseller.
The HyperCard Upgrade Stack provided with the U.S. version of the Group Upgrade
Kit can print the necessary license forms. This stack also includes
information on how to contact Claris for pricing on Volume Purchases.

Q: Is HyperCard also included with the System 7 Personal Upgrade Kit?
A: Yes. It is in the same configuration as ships in every Macintosh accessory
kit, and includes a one-user license.

Q: What about users outside the USA?
A. Except for Canada, Britain, Australia, and France, Claris and Apple have
no
plans to offer localized international versions of HyperCard 2.1 at this time.
HyperCard 2.0 will ship with most System 7 upgrades outside the USA.


                *** Licensing to Commercial Developers ***

Q: Can a developer still license HyperCard 2.1 to include with their product?
A: Yes. Developers can license the HyperCard 2.1 program and a generic Home
stack for inclusion with their value-added products for resale. They apply
through Apple Software Licensing, and the fees have not changed. Developers
must specifically apply for a HyperCard 2.1 license; the new version will not
automatically be shipped to them if the have a license for previous versions.
